LASIK

There are various forms of LASIK. You may hear people calling it "LASIX," but the name is actually short for "laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis."

An instrument called a microkeratome is used in LASIK eye surgery to create a thin, circular flap in the cornea. Another, newer way of making the flap is with a laser, like in Intralase.

The surgeon folds the flap then removes some corneal tissue underneath using a laser. The laser uses a light beam to precisely remove ("ablate") tissue from the cornea.  The flap is then laid back in place, covering the area where the corneal tissue was removed.

The national average for enhancements for LASIK is 12% and can often create complications due to the flap being created.  Some complications that may result due to a flap being created are haze, dry eyes, and corneal scarring.

At First Colonial Eye Center we are capable of performing and are very knowledgeable about LASIK but prefer to perform surface ablation treatments that do not create a flap.
